Mama Bread

Mama Bread. That’s what this simple recipe is dubbed in our house. I make it about once a week in the bread machine and it is so far superior to any grocery store bread that I’ve been making for years. (I think we’re on our 4th bread machine).

Recipe:

Mama Bread (light whole wheat)

Add to bread machine insert in this order:

1.5 cup warm water

2 T oil (I use sunflower)

1 t salt

3 T sugar (honey or maple is fine, if you feel like it)

1/3 c. wheat bran

2.25 c. whole wheat flour (I buy in bulk from Maine Grains)

1 c. All Purpose flour (I buy 50 lb bags of King Arthur)

.25 c. Wheat gluten (Bob’s Red Mill makes a readily findable version)

2 t. Yeast

Set machine to a 2 lb, whole wheat loaf. You’ve got a 50/50 chance that the loaf will rise and stick to the lid of the machine. Don’t fret, you can wash it and the bread is still delicious. Perfect is not the point, yummy and simple is.
